Racecadotril (Acetorphan)

    • Antidiarrhoeal drug (‘enkephalinase inhibitor’)

    Racecadotril is an anti-secretory enkephalinase inhibitor useful in the treatment of diarrhea.

    Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in adults.

    If casual treatment of acute diarrhoea is possible, racecadotril can be co-administered

    Complementary symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in infants (older than 3 months) and children together with oral rehydration (ORS). If casual treatment of acute diarrhoea is possible, racecadotril can be co-administered.

    Racecadotril has no contraindications apart from known hypersensitivity to the substance. There is insufficient data for the therapy of chronic diarrhea, for patients with renal or hepatic failure, and for children under three months.

    The most common adverse effect is headache, which occurs in 1–2% of patients Rashes occur in fewer than 1% of patients. Other described skin reactions include itching, urticaria, angioedema, erythema multiforme, and erythema nodosum.

    Pregnancy: should not be administered

    Lactation: should not be administered
