Description
Oral succinimide-derivative anticonvulsant; indicated for refractory absence seizures (petit mal); generally ineffective for tonic-clonic seizures; may have some activity in partial complex seizures; use with other anticonvulsants for mixed seizure types is generally acceptable; close monitoring for emerging or worsening suicidal thoughts/behavior or depression is recommended.
Indications
Indicated for the treatment of generalized absence seizures.
Contraindications

Common
- Ataxia, dizziness, somnolence
- Erythema
- Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss
- Hematuria, proteinuria
Serious
- Auditory hallucinations (rare), psychotic disorder (rare), suicidal behavior (rare)
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome
- Disorder of hematopoietic structure, leukopenia, monocytosis, pancytopenia
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
Warnings
Do not discontinue rapidly
Succinimides have been associated with blood dyscrasias

Adults
1.2 g/day PO.
Elderly
1.2 g/day PO.
Adolescents
30 mg/kg/day PO, not to exceed 1.2 g/day PO.

30 mg/kg/day PO.
