    • Anticonvulsants, Succinimide

    Oral succinimide-derivative anticonvulsant; indicated for refractory absence seizures (petit mal); generally ineffective for tonic-clonic seizures; may have some activity in partial complex seizures; use with other anticonvulsants for mixed seizure types is generally acceptable; close monitoring for emerging or worsening suicidal thoughts/behavior or depression is recommended.

    Indicated for the treatment of generalized absence seizures. 

    Hypersensitivity

    Common

    • Ataxia, dizziness, somnolence
    • Erythema
    • Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss
    • Hematuria, proteinuria

    Serious

    • Auditory hallucinations (rare), psychotic disorder (rare), suicidal behavior (rare)
    • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
    • Disorder of hematopoietic structure, leukopenia, monocytosis, pancytopenia
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus

    Do not discontinue rapidly

    Succinimides have been associated with blood dyscrasias

    Pregnancy Category: C

    Lactation: avoid during breastfeeding

    Adults

    1.2 g/day PO.

    Elderly

    1.2 g/day PO.

    Adolescents

    30 mg/kg/day PO, not to exceed 1.2 g/day PO.

    Children

    30 mg/kg/day PO.
