    • Opioid Analgesics

    Opioid agonist
    Used for pain severe enough to require opioid analgesic and when other treatments are inadequate
    Possible alternative for patients who fail methadone or adverse effects limit use

    Indicated for the treatment of severe pain that requires an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate.

     

    Absolute: acute abdominal condition, pseudomembranous colitis, respiratory depression

    Relative: asthma (acute), inflammatory bowel disease, respiratory impairment

    Dizziness

    Hypoventilation

    Nausea

    Pruritus

    Hypotension

    Constipation

    Vomiting

    Disturbance of consciousness

    Disturbance in mood

    Bradyarrhythmia

    Cardiac arrest

    Cardiac dysrhythmia

    Palpitations

    Tachyarrhythmia

    Apnea

    Cardiac arrhythmias, drug abuse/dependence, emotional lability, gallbladder disease, head injury, hepatic impairment, hypothyroidism, increased intracranial pressure, prostatic hypertrophy, renal impairment, seizures with epilepsy, urethral stricture, urinary tract surgery, toxin-mediated diarrhea

    Pregnancy Category: B; D if used for prolonged periods or near term

    Lactation: not known if excreted in breast milk

    Adults

    With appropriate dosage titration, there is no maximum dose of levorphanol.

    Geriatric

    With appropriate dosage titration, there is no maximum dose of levorphanol.
