    Furazolidone is antibacterial agent, used in the treatment of bacterial diarrhea and gastro-enteritis. It may also be useful in treating traveler’s diarrhea, typhoid fever, cholera and salmonella infections.

    Indicated in the specific and symptomatic treatment of bacterial or protozoal diarrhea and enteritis caused by susceptible organisms. Furoxone (furazolidone) products are well tolerated, have a very low incidence of adverse reactions.

    Furazolidone is primarily indicated in conditions like Bacillary dysentery, Cholera, Diarrhoea caused by e-coli, Diarrhoea caused by salmonella species, Diarrhoea caused by shigella species, Giardiasis, Intestinal infection caused by giardia lambia, Travelers diarrhoea, Typhoid.

    Furazolidone is contraindicated in conditions like G6pd deficiency.

    The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Furazolidone, which give rise to further complications include Hepatotoxicity, Agranulocytosis, Hepatotoxicity, Hacmolytic Anemia, Acute pulmonary reactions.

    The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Furazolidone are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Fever, Skin rashes, Urticaria, Redness, Malaise, Hypotension, Arthralgia, Angioedema, Darkening of urine, Skin rashes, dizziness.

    Use in Pregnancy: The safety of Furoxone (furazolidone) during the childbearing age has not been established; as with any potent antibacterial, Furoxone (furazolidone) must be administered with caution during the childbearing age. However, animal breeding studies have revealed no evidence of teratogenicity following the administration of Furoxone (furazolidone) for long periods of time and at doses far in excess of those recommended for the human. There have been no clinical reports regarding this possible adverse effect on the fetus or the newborn infant.

    • For oral dosage forms (oral suspension or tablets):
      • For cholera or diarrhea caused by bacteria:
        • Adults—100 milligrams (mg) taken four times a day for five to seven days.
        • Children up to 1 month of age—Use is not recommended.
        • Children 1 month of age and over—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The usual dose is 1.25 mg per kilogram (kg) (0.56 mg per pound) of body weight taken four times a day for five to seven days.
      • For giardiasis:
        • Adults—100 mg taken four times a day for seven to ten days.
        • Children up to 1 month of age—Use is not recommended.
        • Children 1 month of age and over—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The usual dose is 1.25 mg to 2 mg per kg (0.56 to 0.90 mg per pound) of body weight taken four times a day for seven to ten days.
