    Antibiotic; used for uncomplicated UTIs; may be synergistic with beta-lactam antibiotics; sustains effective urinary concentrations for over 3 days; efficacy as a single dose appears to be less than that for fluoroquinolones or co-trimoxazole.

    Indication for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI), such as cystitis, including infections due to resistant gram-negative organisms.

    For urinary tract infection (UTI) prophylaxis.

    Hypersensitivity

    • Anorexia
    • Diarrhea
    • Epigastric
    • Discomfort
    • Headache
    • Nausea
    • Rash
    • Vomiting
    • Dizziness
    • Drowsiness
    • Fatigue
    • Pruritus

    Hepatic injury, including hepatitis and steatosis reported; monitor liver function; effect is reversible upon discontinuation of drug

    Prolonged use may result in bacterial or fungal superinfections, which may appear upt to two months postantibiotic treatment

    Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic shock reported; discontinue use at first signs of hypersensitivity reactions and institute supportive measures

    Pregnancy Category: B

    Lactation: excreted in breast milk; not recommended

    Women: 3 g PO as a single dose.

    Elderly

    Women: 3 g PO as a single dose.
    Men: Safety and efficacy have not been established.
