Brompheniramine/Phenylephrine

    • Antihistamine/Decongestant Combos

    Oral combination of an antihistamine and nasal decongestant
    Used for the temporary relief of symptoms due to allergic rhinitis or other respiratory allergies or the common cold
    May cause increased blood pressure and/or sedation; excitability may occur, especially in children

    Indicated for the temporary relief of symptoms due to seasonal allergic rhinitis or the common cold, including sneezing, rhinorrhea, itching of the nose and throat, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes.

    Hypersensitivity to brompheniramine or phenylephrine

    Use within 14 days of MAO therapy

    Sedation of children

    Breast feeding of newborn

    Severe CAD or hypertension

    Acute asthma attack

    Urinary retention

    Peptic ulcer

    Phenylephrine (Common)

    • Hypertension, reflex bradycardia
    • Anxiety, dizziness, excitability, headache, nervousness, restlessness
    • Rebound congestion, sneezing, pulmonary edema
    • Brompheniramine (Common)

    Anticholinergic effects (blurred vision, dry mouth/nose, throat)

    • Drowsiness, dizziness, decreased coordination, headache
    • Constipation, stomach upset

    May impair mental abilities (CNS depression)

    Caution on CAD, diabetes mellitus, BPH, pyloroduodenal obstruction, respiratory disease, thyroid dysfunction

    Pregnancy category: C; not recommended in first tri-mester or last 2 weeks of pregnancy

    Lactation: Contraindicated

    Adults

    24 mg/day PO brompheniramine and 60 mg/day PO phenylephrine.

    Geriatric

    24 mg/day PO brompheniramine and 60 mg/day PO phenylephrine.

    Adolescents

    24 mg/day PO brompheniramine and 60 mg/day PO phenylephrine.

    Children

    12 years: 24 mg/day PO brompheniramine and 60 mg/day PO phenylephrine.
    6 to 11 years: 12 mg/day PO brompheniramine and 30 mg/day PO phenylephrine.
    1 to 5 years: Safety and efficacy have not been established.

    Infants

    Neonates
